Greystone Program
Testimonials from grateful family members"Our son has been a participant in the Greystone Program at Friends Hospital for almost 20 years. Unlike previous institutions, Greystone has treated him as a human being -- that is with dignity and respect. Residents
form a team, buy their own groceries and help in preparing the meal. Under supervision, they do cleaning of the whole house. Our son had developed the habit of spending most of the day sleeping. This took time away from healthy activities and required group meetings. It didn't take long before the other residents were up in his room singing and getting him up. There is a wholesome feeling of care.
Also the Greystone Program uses all the latest medical knowledge but without involving lock ups, bars on windows and physical restraints. We pray that this venerable hospital may continue to operate in the best Quaker tradition."
"When my brother came to the Greystone Program four years ago, I knew that I had found the perfect place for him. "Jack" had spent over 20 years as an untreated schizophrenic. At Friends, he was treated kindly and with respect. The doctors have worked on his medications and the change is nothing short of miraculous. "Jack" enjoys both his "housemates and the staff. The staff have worked with him and instilled a sense of responsibility that was totally lacking. Today "Jack" hates to leave his friends to come home for holidays and days with his family. The staff is wonderful. I cant begin to tell you how truly wonderful the Greystone Program is and how much it has meant to my family. It has given me back "Jack" who was "lost" for so many years!"
"What I appreciate most about the Greystone program is that I do not have to worry. I can go to sleep at night with the comfort that the Greystone staff is taking great care of our family member. In fact, he might not be alive today were it not for Greystone. They noticed "shortness of breath" which turned out to be a serious arterial blockage. The staff wasted no time in arranging a successful coronary artery bypass surgery which saved our family member's life. We are indeed grateful."
"The entire staff treated my mother as though she were a member of their families. Over the years they came to know her better than anyone else and to appreciate her unique personality. They drew out her capabilities and kept her spark alive. They cherished her. They showed her that she was special in all the little ways we show that to those we love - a warmth of voice, a softness of expression, a gently touch."
"As parents of a deeply troubled son who has suffered the pains of mental illness for many years, we know that through the Greystone Program he has found kindness, empathy, and a high level of individualized attention from the staff who focus on his personal needs. We are most grateful."
